Another class-another adventure
Last night's ghost tour was great! The tour guide strongly resembled a muscular, blonde 40ish Matt Damon; not exactly the type of person you would imagine touring people through the Ghostly aspects of Oxford. Found out about Bloody Mary and the poor souls she had ordered to be burned alive. I'll save you the gruesome details. We learned the origin of the lines saved by the bell and dead ringer... amusingly the Victorians were worried about being buried alive and so a string was placed in their coffins. Above ground the string would be connected to a bell. If you had been in a coma and mistaking pronounced dead( this apparently happened often) you could simply pull the string and the bell would tell the gardener- who of course would be right there- that, oops a mistake has been made, I am buried alive, please get me out. =) One woman in our group said she had a hard time sleeping last night due to the tour I guess the ghost of Exeter must have been in her room!
Woke this morning early enough to sneak in a quick jog and I made it back just in time for the fire drill- the cool part was we got to congregate in the chapel which was built in the 15th century! very Byzantine art in the nave and gorgeous stained glass.
went to pre order copies of harry potter- gotta have my British version, I am currently debating whether or not to purchase the British version in the other books...
returned to campus in time for a lecture that was so all over the place... Interesting note though- in the lecture hall there is a fresh flower arrangement daily!
Onto another strange lunch with cream of celery soup- have found a new fondness for all soups, dad would be proud I even had pea soup a few nights ago. It is the only food that warms me up.
We decided that in order to make it through the seminar today, we needed caffeine. After settling into my chair with a cuppa tea, I realized my tutor has hair like danny patridge. If Danny and Reuben had a love child that would be him! That kept me entertained for quite a while needless to say. The rooms in which we have seminar are ornate and have intricate carvings. All have fireplaces. It reminds me that when this was all built there was no heat; only fire to keep warm.
This evening there is a debate on the war on Iraq. It will be interesting to watch and see the pseudo academic Americans get up and argue. I will be viewing not participating. Although I have strong opinions I am in no mood to make myself look the fool. =) Somehow the Brits just sound smarter when they talk!
Off to another exciting meal- last night's lasagne resembled hamburger helper way too much!
Cheers!

Hello Ali - I have not heard the 'saved by the bell' tale. Would be very hard to accept ... except they are English.
I can picture your body language with the Iraq war discussion. It probalby resembled trying to muffle a giant sneeze! As to moving out of the shadow of the English accent / idiom - just spend a few minutes watching the House of Commons...Monty Python never went off the telly (sp?) just moved to a new location. Or read a few days of the tabloids - respond to a presenter that 'that is virtually a quote from (whatever tabloid article) I am happy to see you are not just talking out of the top of your head"! Go ahead - be the glib American! I have a little essay to expand - I am cutting out for now!!
Hope you have a fun trip plnned for the weekend. Stay toasty!
Love You, Dad
